Creating a Web photo gallery using photoshop!

surfnlearn.com

Photoshop can be used to create a very cool photo album for your website(s), and the best part is, its automated. The first thing you need to do is select which images you want to be in your album. You can either go ahead and select those pictures one by one, or you can go about the easy way and put them in a single folder and just choose the folder. Now, once you're done gathering up all the images, open photoshop, click on the File menu and go to automate, from the pop up menu click Web photo gallery... Once you click this, a menu will open. On that menu you will be able to see quite a few options, my aim is to guide you through those options.

First of all is the style menu, this menu contains the already created templates by adobe itself, so why not use them? Click on all the styles and choose which one you prefer, whenever you choose a style the image in the preview box updates itself. I went with the horizontal neutral style. Below the style menu, is the e-mail box, whatever e-mail address you enter here will be on the webpage as a link so that anyone visiting your web page can reach you, however this is optional, should you choose not to enter it, is up to you.

Now comes the part where we identify to photoshop which files we would like to appear on our webpage, so if you gathered up all your images in a folder, right now is the time to click browse in the 'Source Images' area:

Select the folder you wish to grab the files FROM, and then select the Destination button and select a folder(or create a new folder) to transfer the html and images to. This will be the folder your webpage will be in. You can also select the 'Include all subfolders' option in case you have a lot of pictures located in different folders inside a folder, but there wont be links to every folder, just one big album.

Below this section, is the Options section. Right now, it should be on the General options, in this option if you wish to have your images copyright, description and file information etc displayed click the Preserve all metadata option, otherwise ignore it and go to the Banner menu:

Enter the name of the site, thats up to you, below it if you took the photograph's or want to put any information into that box go ahead, the contact info, is to enter phone numbers or any other means of contacting you in case someone wishes to. The date is supposed to identify the day the album was created, it is optional and its up to you to enter a date or not.

In the Large images option, you can choose the size of the large image as it will be shown in the image viewer on the web page, also you can choose the quality of the image. You can also choose to not resize the images at all but that would not be a smart move as most images are not of the same size. There is also an option to choose a border around the image.

In the Thumbnails option, you can choose the size of the thumbnail as it appears on your website, as well as choose a border, and choose if the filename should appear on the webpage at all.

The Custom Colors option, is very useful too, it is basically the color scheme of your albums webpage, you can choose the background, the color of the banner your Site name will appear on, the color of the text on the webpage, link colors can also be customized.

The Security option, in here is one good and useful option, you can customize photoshop to add a certain text on every image it adds to the album, for example, I asked it to display 'www.surfnlearn.com' on the bottom right of every image it adds to the web photo gallery:

So instead of having to brand your photo's one by one, you just have to enter it once and its applied on as many images as you like! The rest of the information in the security option is gathered from the image, you can add file information to files saved in Photoshop, Large Document Format (PSB), TIFF, JPEG, EPS, and PDF formats.

Enjoy your web photo gallery!
