Today, we are going to make day turn into evening in this image using the amazing Layer Styles and Color Effects they provide in Photoshop.

For this Tutorial, you will require basic knowledge of Photoshop

You can Download the images of the files used to make this tutorial and the original image along with the final PSD here. This is a rar file, you’ll need to unzip it. Right click and save as to download the image of the Moon here. The image used in ‘Step 1’, is the original image we are working on. So, lets get started turning Day into Evening!

Step 1:

Open Image.

Step 2:

Create a New Layer.

Open the Moon Image and Paste the Moon into the new layer.

Activate the Transform tool, You can do this by either clicking Edit –> Free Transform or Pressing CTRL+T

Decrease size to 20% width and 20% height or choose your own size, till the moon is small enough to look good, i think mines a bit big.

Adjust as shown in image below:

Step 3:

Change the layer Style to screen this will get rid of the black background in the Image.

Copy the Moon Layer, now adjust the moon as shown on the image to make a reflection in the lake below. If you copied the layer, it should already be screened, if you pasted a new moon, change the Layer style to Screen to get rid of the black background:

Step 4: (Optional)

If you want to you can turn the moon upside down, not necessary here because the moon’s reflection will be barely visible.

Rotate the moon using the transform tool

Edit –> Transform –> Rotate 180

Then you flip the moon Horizontally.

Edit –> Transform –> Flip Horizontal

Step 5:

Now to set the Opacity for the Moon’s.

For the moon in the Sky set the opacity to 60%
For the moon in the Lake set the opacity to 10%

Step 6:

Create a New Layer.

Select the Paint Bucket Tool and throw the color #F1EF2B on the layer by clicking on it. It will cover the image.
Change your Layer style to Hue.

This is the result:

Step 7:

Create a New Layer.

Select the Paint Bucket Tool and throw the color #C30D0D on the layer by clicking on it. It will cover the image.
Change your Layer style to Overlay.

Set the Opacity to 46%

You should get the final image:
